John A. Barnard MD was chief of Pediatrics at Nationwide Children's Hospital from 2015 to 2022, was president of The Abigail Wexner Research Institute from 2005 to 2022 and held the Ann I. Wolfe Endowed Chair in Pediatric Research at Nationwide Children’s. He was also chair of the Department of Pediatrics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. He has authored more than 80 peer-reviewed journal articles, reviews, and book chapters and contributed 150 pediatric research columns for the Columbus Dispatch.
He served as president of the North American Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition Foundation (NASPGHAN) and was later president of the NASPGHAN Foundation. In 2018, he received the Shwachman Award, NASPGHAN’s highest career honor.
Dr. Barnard recently served as interim President and Chief Executive Officer of the American Board of Pediatrics. Now retired, he retains board certification in pediatric gastroenterology and is Secretary/Treasurer of ImproveCareNow. He is currently Chair of the American Board of Pediatrics Board of Directors and is a member of the Georgia Tech Research Institute Board of Directors.
